2025 Convening: New Intelligence Crisis Responses

CONVENING ANNOUNCEMENT

Navigating the Transition: Prosperity for All in the Age of New Intelligence

We stand at the threshold of an unprecedented economic transformation. In as soon as a few years from now, advanced AI—new intelligence—may rapidly begin displacing large numbers of knowledge and management workers. Such widespread layoffs among highly compensated professionals could trigger cascading job losses across multiple sectors, potentially causing generalized economic and social crises. Or, if managed proactively, this transition could usher in a new era of prosperity and human flourishing.

New Consensus invites visionary leaders, economists, technologists, labor advocates, policy experts, and community organizers to come together to explore strategies to navigate and leverage this potential upheaval. The aim of this gathering is not to predict certain outcomes but to prepare thoughtfully for plausible scenarios.

GUIDELINES

Participants must be prepared to engage constructively with the following assumptions as the basis for our discussions:

  • AI rapidly gains the ability to perform any job that primarily involves digital interaction (computer-based, remote, phone-based work).
  • Market competition compels companies to swiftly replace human workers with AI wherever possible.
  • AI-driven job displacement happens rapidly and extensively due to minimal physical investment or retraining requirements.
  • Fierce competition significantly reduces the profitability and taxable income of AI-driven businesses.
  • International competition and widespread availability of small-scale, locally-run AI models make it impractical to restrict or heavily tax AI.
  • A massive and urgent backlog of physical, caring, and creative labor exists globally, necessary for transitioning to a clean economy, repairing environmental damage, and building high-quality infrastructure in healthcare, transportation, education, housing, and more.
  • Over-reliance on automation for these tasks would exacerbate environmental harm, increase greenhouse gas emissions, and may not be feasible during economic instability.
  • Human well-being fundamentally requires meaningful employment and purposeful engagement, making it essential to strategically reserve significant work for humans.

AGENDA

Join us to collectively address urgent questions:

  • How can we reorganize economic systems to fairly and effectively distribute the remaining physical, caring, and creative labor?
  • What should be the key demands and strategic actions of labor movements, social organizations, community leaders, and political parties during this transition?
  • How can we leverage AI-driven productivity gains to significantly increase wages and reduce working hours?
  • What lessons can we draw from historical economic transitions, including post-war rebuilding efforts and industrial-era labor movements?
  • What new institutional frameworks or policy measures are required to effectively manage the economic disruption caused by rapid automation?
  • How do we build inclusive, politically powerful movements capable of advocating for and implementing transformational economic reforms?
  • What roles should governments, businesses, and civil society organizations play to ensure equitable outcomes?
  • How can we proactively prevent widespread economic inequality and social unrest as AI reshapes employment?

Together, we aim to prepare for—and shape—an equitable and prosperous future, ensuring the extraordinary capabilities of new intelligence serve humanity and create shared prosperity and meaningful lives for all.
